Director of the Pittsburgh Coalition Against Pornography since 1986. A lifetime resident of Pittsburgh, he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Filmmaking from Emerson College (Boston, MA) in 1980.
Following college, Mr. Checkley felt God's call to work directly with people in need and joined Covenant House of New York City to help runaway and homeless youth. Many of the young people whom Mr. Checkley counseled were prostitutes or were sexually exploited by the pornography industry. He stayed in New York City for one year and then moved to Toronto, Ontario for two years to help establish a new Covenant House program.
In 1984, Mr. Checkley returned to Pittsburgh and was hired to develop and supervise The Whale's Tale Downtown Outreach Center; a 15 bed runaway shelter in downtown Pittsburgh.
From his exposure to teenage prostitutes and the Times Square sex industry, Mr. Checkley witnessed firsthand the devastating effects of pornography on individuals and society. Mr. Checkley decided to actively oppose the pornography industry and joined the Board of Directors for PCAP in March of 1985. One year later the Board hired him to be the first full time Director.
Under Mr. Checkley's leadership the Pittsburgh Coalition Against Pornography has:
- Made the mere possession of child pornography illegal in PA;
- Improved our state obscenity code in 1990;
- Stopped the invasion of "Pink Newsboxes" distributing free adult literature on downtown streets;
- Helped closed down an adult bookstore in Cranberry Township in 1996;
- Facilitated the passage of over 50 ordinances to control sexually oriented businesses in southwestern PA over the past 10 years.
- Launched a new project in 2001 entitled, "WholeHearted" which addresses a broad range of sexual issues.
Mr. Checkley is married to the former Ms. Laurie Robinson and they are the parents of three girls.
