In what is perhaps everyone's favorite Christmas movie, "It's a Wonderful Life", the character of George Bailey (played by Jimmy Stewart) comes to believe that his family and friends would be better off if he were to kill himself.
When, in desperation, George attempts suicide, Clarence the Angel "rescues" George by showing him what life in his community would have been like if he had never lived.
Life without George Bailey was quite different for his community of Bedford Falls. Film director Frank Capra chose to transform the quaint and neighborly town into a brawling, vice-filled "Times Square" environment. Without the influence of George's life that was lived by the Golden Rule, the values of Bedford Falls become dominated by "old man Potter," a ruthless and greedy industrialist. The neighborhood theater shows skin flicks instead of family films. The town flirt becomes the town prostitute. Infidelity, drunkenness and gambling reign.
Clarence the Angel says to George, "Strange, isn't it? Each man's life touches so many other lives." Now George could see the bigger picture. Despite his personal frustrations and setbacks, his life of self-sacrifice had made the quality of life better for everyone, including himself. This is what community values is all about.
Your CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT to have obscenity laws enforced depends upon the community values that you uphold. If you do nothing, then the degrading and destructive values of pornography will predominate.
You see, you really can make a difference in the community's values, just like George Baily did. With your active support of decency, our communities can have a wonderful life -- free from hard-core pornography.
