The Five Key Principles of Conscious Recovery

  • Underneath all addictive behavior is an essential self that is whole and perfect

  • The addiction itself has never been the “problem” but was a strategy that has lost its effectiveness

  • Treating addiction must go beyond treating symptoms and get down to the underlying root causes of destructive behavior

  • The root causes of addictive behavior are unresolved trauma, spiritual disconnection, and toxic shame

  • There is a pathway to permanent freedom through the adoption of spiritual practices and principles

FAQ

No. Conscious Recovery is a perfect addition to the great work your program is already offering. It is a seamless enhancement to the 12-steps, CBT, DBT, MAT, and other modalities.

The two main differences are: 1. Conscious Recovery offers a pathway to healing the root causes of addictive tendencies, rather than only treating symptoms and behaviors. 2. Conscious Recovery explores the inherent wholeness of clients, rather than focusing on their seeming brokenness.

Staff retention, improved treatment outcomes, increased length of stay, and enhanced morale, to name a few. It also offers philosophical continuity in your clinical approach even if you lose some key players on your team.

The groups are psycho-dynamic, not psycho-educational. We strongly believe that clients change through experience, not by only gaining information. The groups are interactive and engaging and address different learning styles and abilities. Conscious Recovery is designed to be a “plug-and-play” system of care that is easily understood and implemented by you and your clinical staff.

Not Necessarily. Although created as residential and outpatient, both sets of curriculum can be utilized in various treatment settings. Additionally, the curriculum can be integrated in as few as one group a week, or scaled to have a Conscious Recovery group each day at your center.

The curriculum can easily be tailored to suit your specific needs. For example, some programs run the residential groups three times per week, so rather than being a 12-week curriculum, it is four weeks. And, each groups stands on its own as a powerful and effective experience.

Yes. In addition to the residential and outpatient groups, your program can offer “conscious conversation” (book study) groups that are peer led, simply using the Conscious Recovery book. (They simply read out loud and discuss.) In addition, the Conscious Recovery workbook can be used in a group setting. (Although most often used individually.)

No. It is certainly not a requirement, because the group curriculum is designed to stand on its own. However, ordering books, workbooks, and journals for your clients, offers additional support for them and creates a deepening of the material. Authorized programs get 40% off of all books, and certified programs get 50% off of all books, for as long as you are enrolled in the program.

As a Conscious Recovery authorized treatment program, your clinical staff will have access to a portal that includes extensive training videos, digital group curriculum explanations, and video demonstrations of some of the exercises/activities. In addition, you will receive a very thorough and extensive facilitator’s guide for your clinical staff.

All the Conscious Recovery certified and authorized treatment programs have access to a monthly Zoom meeting with TJ Woodward, where he answers questions and offers tips to any member of your staff.

Yes. The Conscious Recovery Experience is offered as an additional aftercare tool, and has proven to increase long-term outcomes. As a Conscious Recovery authorized program, you will be able to simply share a link with your clients, or buy in bulk at a discounted price.

No. However, we are currently engaging in clinical studies. What we can tell you is that our partnered programs have given us extensive feedback regarding the impact of Conscious Recovery, and clients have reported that the Conscious Recovery groups are their favorite offering of the program, and that the books and workbooks are powerful recovery tools.
